Renters Most Interested in This Midwestern City

Kansas city knocked Minneapolis from its top position the past four months.

Apartment seekers’ eyes have turned to Overland Park, Kansas.

In April, the Kansas City suburb dethroned Minneapolis as the most sought-after city among renters exploring RentCafe.com for apartments.

“Engagement with Overland Park listings is high, indicating strong interest from those looking for rental apartments,” writes RentCafe’s Adina Dragos.

The city is about 14 miles southwest of Kansas City and is the second most populous city in the state. Its top employer is T Mobile.

Minneapolis held the top spot for four consecutive months before falling to No. 2 in April. Atlanta remains in the third position for the second month in a row.

Cleveland climbed nine spots since March to fourth and Washington, D.C., sits at No. 5.

Rankings are based on consumers actively viewing listings, favoriting properties, and customizing searches amid limited availability.

April’s data also reveals subtle shifts in renter preferences across regions, Dragos reported.

The West and South are tied for the most favored region according to renters, each boasting nine cities in the ranking. Following closely is the Midwest, represented by eight cities, while the Northeast has three entries in the ranking.

Overland Park was propelled by a 256% surge in page views and a 138% increase in favorited listings compared to the previous year. Notably, this surge in interest coincides with a strong 67% increase year-over-year in saved searches on RentCafe.com to confirm the city’s popularity.

Minneapolis saw a 133% increase in page views and a 47% increase in saved searches compared to April 2023.

Atlanta saw only a slight 1% increase in the number of listings available, but the interest among renters — particularly those hailing from New York, Miami, and Chicago — remains robust, according to the report.
