Car and Truck Shipping Volume Soars in Savannah
Port of Brunswick reported a 44% YoY increase in April.
The Port of Brunswick near Savannah, Ga., has been the beneficiary of record numbers of car and truck imports as a result of the Port of Baltimore’s bridge collapse in March.
The AP reported that Brunswick moved more than 80,000 vehicles and heavy machinery units across its docks in April, a whopping 44% increase compared with April 2023.
Brunswick is the second busiest US port for such cargo – a claim Port of Baltimore held prior to the accident. Baltimore’s port has essentially been closed since March 26.
Volume at the Savannah port had been growing prior to the Baltimore incident.
GlobeSt.com reported earlier this month that until 2021, the Savannah market had recorded just one industrial transaction worth more than $100M—since then there have been 11 industrial trades of $100M or more, including the current record of $161M, set by ASB Real Estate Investments’ purchase of the 1.4M SF Savannah Logistics Center in December 2021.
Griff Lynch, CEO of the Georgia Ports Authority, told AP that the Port of Brunswick has plenty of room to absorb the shipments.
Meanwhile, the Georgia agency’s board is investing $262 million in upgrades and expansions to boost Brunswick’s capacity, AP reported.
Completed projects include 80 acres (32 hectares) of additional outdoor storage and 450,000 square feet (41,800 square meters) of new warehouse space.
