White Collar Jobs Are Scarcer as Labor Markets Get Tighter

A byproduct might be that companies are more successful in getting employees back to the office.

There’s a new sign of a weakening labor market: unemployed white-collar workers having a hard time finding a new job, as The Wall Street Journal noted.

The data is clear in the jobs report for November 2024, with 1.66 million out of work for at least 27 weeks — more than half a year — or 23.2% of the unemployed. The average duration of unemployment was 23.7 weeks; a year ago it was 19.9 weeks. Over the last year, the average period of unemployment increased by 3.8 weeks, almost a month. It’s 46% of a year, nearly the cutoff for that highest tier of unemployment.
