ATLANTIC CITY, NJ-It's been almost three years in the making, but the much-heralded Borgata Hotel, Casino and Spa is about to make its debut. Boyd Gaming Corp. officials announced yesterday that July 3rd is the day when the $1.1-billion property will officially open its doors. The Las Vegas-based Boyd is the managing partner of the project in a joint venture with 50% owner MGM Mirage.

“We are very excited about our opening and look forward to sharing the Borgata experience,” says chairman/CEO William S. Boyd, in a statement. “Interest in Borgata is reaching new heights. In fact, our Borgata Rewards database is currently enrolling more than 2,500 qualified customers a day.”

By the numbers, Borgata is enormous. The 40-story property encompasses just over 2,000 guest rooms and suites, 125,000 sf of gaming, 11 restaurants, a like number of retail stores, a 50,000-sf spa, 70,000 sf of event space and parking for more than 7,000 cars.

The July 3rd opening “is contingent upon final regulatory approvals,” according to Boyd, who says he's confident that all the “paperwork” will be done in time. Besides occupancy permits, the property also has to get the final approval of state gaming regulators. The latter will be watching closely next week as Borgata's gaming operations are opened up to invited guests for the final public trials of its gaming operations.
