Parkmerced

SAN FRANCISCO—Parkmerced has a long history, GlobeSt.com learns. Consisting of 152 acres, it was originally developed by Metropolitan Life in the 1940s to provide housing for returning soldiers. The current owner/developer Maximus Real Estate Partners has plans to substantially renovate and expand the multifamily property that features more than 3,200 apartments and 10,000 residents.

Maximus is re-examining the way people live and connect in the urban environment with the redevelopment of Parkmerced. Maximus is transforming the community into a pedestrian-focused neighborhood with open green space such as The Meadow, which runs between the four towers on the property's western edge.

The Meadow's recent renovations underscore the company's goal to create a culture that embraces an active lifestyle focused on “whole living.” The concept of whole living is built on the idea that enhancing the environment in which people live also enhances their lives.

The improvements in this sustainable environment are coupled with an active lifestyle. A new outdoor sports center allows residents to enjoy a full workout from the comfort of their back yards. Also, a new playground, two beach volleyball courts, two bocce courts and barbecue areas give residents the space to mingle with friends, family and neighbors.

“At Parkmerced, we're creating a new kind of neighborhood in San Francisco that fosters community, wellness and an active lifestyle in an urban setting that connects residents to nature and each other,” said Rob Rosania, founder and lead visionary of Maximus.

Parkmerced's design components and amenities emphasize the community's natural appeal with a multitude of outdoor recreational activities. Fort Funston provides miles of hiking and equestrian trails and 200-foot bluffs; Lake Merced offers freshwater for fishing and aquatic activities; TPC Harding Park is a stunning municipal golf course surrounded by Lake Merced on three sides and is part of the PGA Tour's network of courses; Ocean Beach is one of the Bay Area's top surfing spots; and the San Francisco Zoo features spectacular gardens and a new playground.

Parkmerced is located on the main route between San Francisco and Silicon Valley. The development has been dubbed the largest urban multifamily community in California and is focused on becoming an international model of urban sustainability. Earlier this year, Parkmerced announced an exclusive partnership with UBER to launch a car-free living program to encourage reduction of carbon emissions and establish a sustainable, multimodal transportation model for communities and developments around the world.

Maximus also owns several Bay Area properties, including The Cove at Tiburon in Marin County and Sharon Green in Menlo Park.
