LAS VEGAS—"I enjoy being able to connect with colleagues from all over the country that I don't always get an opportunity to see. And, of course, deal making!" That was according to Shannon Pope, when we asked about what the Transwestern SVP enjoyed best about the recent RECon show here in Las Vegas. According to Pope, "The retail sector will continue to evolve from where it is today. Spaces that had previously been retail are now being considered for healthcare, residential and office. We also continue to see a strong amount of out-parcel development for single- and multitenant users." Pope is also seeing a repurposing of large box space, telling GlobeSt.com that recent bankruptcies creates some interesting opportunities in markets that were mature and more challenging for larger tenants to enter. Conversely, it adds to the problems for markets that are already struggling to fill larger vacancies. We also touched base with Kitsy Ritter, senior director of leasing/Midwest for the Maley Co., who said that landlords and tenants are placing an increased emphasis on technology to enhance customer experience and to access consumer data. "Shopping centers are investing in enhanced wi-fi, mobile device messaging systems, parking reservation systems as well as virtual and augmented reality. The Shops at 900 North Michigan in Chicago was the first retail center to install a digital canopy by ESI Design. The multi-million-dollar digital canopy stretches the length of the building and will feature tie-ins with local art museums and artists. Such digital displays and interactive improvements allow shoppers to seek their own 'Instagrammable' moment at the mall." In addition, Ritter says, retailers are also heavily invested in technology within their stores through smart fitting rooms, mobile concierge services and in-store kiosks. "The importance of omni-channel continues to shape the way retailers grow their businesses."
