realsharewellnessplaySCOTTSDALE, AZ—As health care providers incorporate preventative health care and wellness into their value-based outcomes, what opportunities will arise? Will healthcare providers/systems sponsor wellness & fitness centers, encompassing the “mind-body-spirit” mantra used in assisted living and senior care communities or will their investments be focused more in the post-acute facilities like skilled nursing, rehab hospitals and/or assisted living. Those were just a few of the many questions tackled by speakers last week at RealShare Healthcare Real Estate.

Allan Brown, co-founder and principal of Prevarian, participates in wellness by creating a residential community, not a healthcare facility, where it is a safe environment where seniors can receive healthcare services in a home. The key, he said, is to “endeavor to reach those folks before they come into the hospital.”

Panelist Gary Smith, SVP of Mainstreet Health, also believes in the idea that there is a better recovery setting for patients. “We can partner with acute-care hospitals in the short term… it is about the ability to bring preventative healthcare and try to avoid the stays.”

NovaLeigh Dodge-Krupa, VP of Genesis Rehab Services, is looking to partner with home health agencies, acute-care providers and more. “We are looking at engaging therapy to move wellness in a different way to the communities.”

She noted that what is important is creating more collaboration. “We need to have standardized approaches across our continuum.”

She added that she defines wellness differently than most. “It isn't just prevention. It is about managing as well, like with diabetes for example.”

Allan Brown, co-founder and principal of Prevarian, added that contract rehab plays an important role in the wellness continuum.

Mainstreet Health's Smith said that the biggest change in the business in the past 6 to 8 months has been that hospitals want to get involved in post op. “They need to have strong partners downstream from the surgery op center and those downstream partners are the AL, IL and the therapy that is required for those outcomes to be achieved.”
