Those thoughts were according to Derrick Moore, principal of urban retail properties at Avison Young. In preparation for the upcoming ICSC RECon event in Las Vegas this weekend, Moore tells GLobeSt.com that the main buzz or talk at the event will likely be about the impact of omni-channeling and internet sales on brick-and-mortar real estate requirements. Additionally, he says, there will be a lot of talk regarding the question: Are we facing a shrinking demand for space in malls and Urban retail?
As for what he is most looking forward to? He is looking forward to seeing “how and if technology is impacting our selection of retail uses.
“Attendees are coming to see the newest concepts and what's trending in retail around the world,” explains Moore.”
Erick Collazo, VP of development for Metropica Holding LLC, tells GlobeSt.com that his firm's goal in attending the event this year is to seek out new innovations and unique tenants that are focused on the coming trends. “We are looking to make connections with vendors that share our vision for the future of retail and offer enhanced concepts and boutique style experiences that will fit well into our creative high street center at Metropica.”
Jeff Gunning, SVP of CallisonRTKL in the firm's Dallas office, tells GlobeSt.com that he expects this year's RECon event to be as vital as ever. “We expect to see new projects, but anticipate even more projects that are adaptive reuse or complete transformations of an existing project,” he says. “Our Lone Star Brewery District in San Antonio, Texas and our Ballston Quarter project in Arlington, Virginia are great examples of the rethinking of the traditional shopping experience.”
