CHICAGO—Sarah Wick, a project manager with Related Midwest, was named the winner of the Young Visionary Award at the sixth annual Urban Land Institute Chicago Vision Awards, held May 31 at Morgan MFG in Chicago's West Loop. The award honors outstanding young leaders in the land use and development fields. Currently, she is the day-to-day project manager for the revitalization of the Julia C. Lathrop Homes on Chicago's Northwest Side, a project that will transform the historic property into a mixed-use, mixed-income community. Since joining Related Midwest in 2014, Wick has helped the firm finance, acquire and develop more than 2,100 affordable residences throughout Chicago and the Midwest, representing a total investment of nearly $460 million. Wick joined Related after working as a project manager at The Community Builders Inc. and Jonathan Rose Cos., where she helped finance and manage tenant-in-place renovations in Chicago, New York City and suburban New York.
MINNEAPOLIS—Ryan A+E, Inc., Ryan Companies' architecture and engineering practice, has just hired two key architects for its growing team. Alena (Sakalouski) Johnson, joins the team as director of architecture, healthcare for Ryan A+E and will lead day-to-day operations of the healthcare design team. A member of AIA and co-chair of the healthcare architecture committee, she has worked on Mother Baby Centers at United Hospital, Abbott Northwestern and Mercy Hospital, in addition to a multitude of other healthcare projects around the region.
Adam McLane, also joins Ryan as senior architect, healthcare. “These hires expand our healthcare footprint around the nation,” says Mike Ryan, market leader North Region. “Healthcare is an important sector for us and recruiting top talent like Alena and Adam give us the strategic expertise we desire to deliver quality projects and outstanding customer service.”

DETROIT—Marcus & Millichap has just helped complete the sale of Orchestra Place, a five-story, 153,279-square-foot office building in Detroit. “The sales price was north of an 8.5% cap rate,” says John Godwin, senior vice president investments in Marcus & Millichap's Detroit office. “Demand for office space in downtown Detroit, which is in the midst of a renaissance, continues to be strong as companies from a wide range of industries are moving back into the city center and along Woodward Ave. into the New Center neighborhood where The District Detroit development is underway.” Godwin represented the seller, a Detroit-area nonprofit, and procured the buyer, a regional investment group. Built in 1997, the building is located on the corner of Woodward Ave. and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. at 3663 Woodward Ave., next door to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra building. A recently opened Q line streetcar station is in front of the building.
KANSAS CITY—Kindred Biosciences, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on pets, has just acquired a manufacturing facility in Elwood, KS. The property, formerly owned by Boehringer Ingelheim and by Strategic Veterinary Pharmaceuticals, Inc., includes about eight acres of land and two buildings encompassing approximately 180,000 square feet with clean rooms, utility, equipment, and related quality documentation suitable for small molecule and biologics manufacturing. The total purchase price was $3.75 million and the company expects to close within 30-days, subject to the completion of the inspection/diligence period and satisfactions of the conditions of escrow. “We are very excited to become a brick and mortar addition to the KC Animal Health Corridor,” says Denise Bevers, co-founder and chief operating officer of KindredBio. “While we already employ top talent in the Kansas area, this acquisition will allow us to recruit additional talent to support the manufacture of drugs and biologics for companion animals.”
ELMHURST, IL—Darwin Realty recently represented the landlord in a new full-building lease at 951 Fargo Ave. in Elk Grove Village, IL. Darwin president Richard G. Daly and Darwin director of brokerage services Adam Haefner represented a private institutional investor in the lease to seasonal food gifts distributor Marketplace Brands, LLC. It selected the 103,987 square foot building because it was recently renovated and features 22' ceilings, 11,000 square feet of office space, 10 dock positions and one drive-in door. The building has a Class 6B tax incentive in place and can be served by rail. NAI Hiffman's Joe Bronson and Josh Will represented the tenant.

BUFFALO GROVE, IL—Principle Construction Corp. has just built a new 157,500 square foot warehouse on the 11.82 acre site at 850 Asbury Dr. in Buffalo Grove, IL. Principle demolished a 55,000 square foot vacant building on the site to build the new structure. The new facility features 32' clear height ceilings, 36 truck docks, 4 drive-in doors and a paved parking lot for 173 cars. Ten to twenty percent of the building is built office space. James A. Brucato and Mark E. Augustyn, owners of Principle, say the company was able to shave an entire month off the completion date. Michael Long was the principal for the new building. Rick Grabowski served as project manager for Principle Construction Corp. while Mark and Matt Frane served as superintendents. Harris Architects provided architectural services and Kimley-Horn and Associates' Jamie Putnam was the project engineer. Ridgeline Property Group's Pete Harmon marketed the building for its owner, USRLP Asbury Drive, LLC.
