SHELBY, NC-After 10 years of uphill effort and $1.2 million in redevelopment costs, the town of Shelby, roughly 45 miles east of Charlotte, has restored Lafayette Place, adding 17,000 sf of retail and residential space to the center city.
CHARLOTTE-Morehead Properties Inc. paid $665,000 or $26 per sf for a foreclosed 25,000-sf athletic facility, but converting the high-ceilinged, large glass-windowed court area into office space required ingenuity. The developer did it by creating a second level with reinforced steel beams.

DAVIDSON, NC-Davidson Clinic is taking 12,000 sf at the $5-million, 36,000-sf Davidson Medical Center, about 20 miles north of Charlotte. The project is part of the 18-acre Davidson Gateway mixed-use development. The center is targeting a September 2001 completion date.
CHARLOTTE-Post Properties Inc. is starting construction on Five West, a 40-unit condominium project with a build-out cost of $7.5 million. The project is the Atlanta-based developer's first for-sale community in Charlotte and is the second phase of the Post Gateway Place apartments venture.
CHARLOTTE-The developer plans to break ground by year end or first quarter 2001 on a 125,000-sf structure at an estimated construction cost of $14.5 million. The first 116,000-sf building, also a spec venture, is 50% pre-leased and scheduled to open Oct. 1.
CHARLOTTE-The city council is asking the CHARLOTTE, NC-Justice Department to transfer a littered 4.6-acre lot to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Development Corp. The agency would develop a $3.4-million shopping center to replace the sagging Westover Shopping Center.
CHARLOTTE-The Charlotte Housing Authority is sending out requests for proposals to developers interested in building on a 1.4-acre parcel in the city's First Ward area.
CHARLOTTE-S.L. Bagby Co., a commercial lighting firm, has purchased a 9,400-sf office condominium for $138.29 psf at the refurbished 1230 W. Morehead building.
