This sector has been reinventing itself for millennia, and it will continue to do so, meaning now may be the time to buy more retail properties, CBRE's Spencer Levy tells attendees at Wednesday's CREW San Diego event.

Even though the sector has been expanding for nine years, investors' interest has not slackened at all.

Like the self-storage and senior housing sectors, the demographics for student housing make it a safe bet.

“The growth of e-commerce has triggered a permanent, structural change in demand for these properties,” says Adam Mullen at CBRE.

Food and beverage concepts and retailtainment are among the growth areas in both new development and redevelopment.

However, 2017's 7% year-over-year decline in sales volume was met by a 7.1% increase in commercial property values, says Real Capital Analytics.
